Gary Jones is the Publisher of The Elberton Star, a position he has held since 2003. He held previous positions of General Manager and Managing Editor at The Elberton Star and The Elbert County Examiner since 1996. He has been News Editor of The Eatonton (Ga.) Messenger,Weekend Editor of the Athens (Ga.) Banner-Herald/Athens Daily News, Assistant Sports Editor of the Athens Daily News and Sports Editor of the Marietta (Ga.) Daily Journal. He received an ABJ from the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia in 1980. While working on his degree he cut his journalistic teeth working for The 

Elberton Star under then-publisher Bob Williford in the late 1970s.

 

Gary is active with the Elberton Downtown Development Authority, The Salvation Army, The Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation, Housing and Economic Leadership Partners and he is a member of Elberton First United Methodist Church. Gary and his wife, Anna Grant Jones, reside in Elberton with a "big-boned" orange cat named POTUS. All three members of the household are avid Atlanta Braves fans. Gary has two children, Ashley and Christopher, who both reside in Athens.
