Habari gani (Greetings),
Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture and was created by Maulana Karenga in 1966. The 1960's was a time of civil unrest in the United States, a time when African Americans were struggling for equal rights. There were the riots, the sit-ins, the marches, the arrests and the persecutions. Karenga sensed a need to alleviate the pain this struggle caused by celebrating the day after Christmas through the New Year–African American style to unite and rejuvenate the community with reference to its cultural heritage.
